This unique 9 bedroom house is a magnificent 9,000 sq. ft. granite home built in 1886 in the very rare Richardsonian Romanesque architecture. The Greenwich Historical Society states that it is the only example of this architecture in Greenwich because of the prohibitive cost of its construction. It has retained the period details such as nine fireplaces with hand made Victorian tiles, ornate plaster moldings, large stain glass windows, pocket doors etc. There also is an elevator and an in the wall safe behind paneling.
It is situated on a gorgeous 2 acres of expansive level lawns with beautiful old trees including the largest magnolia tree in the northeast and a 40' x 20' swimming pool.
Because of an outstanding southern exposure as well as numerous and large windows, our home is very bright and cheery. The house has been owned by the present owners since 1927. Thus this is the first time on the market since that time. Only two families have owned it since 1886.
Greenwich, Connecticut, the town the home is located, is considered by many to be a most desirable suburb of New York City, because it is the closest town in CT. to New York City, the taxes are much lower in Greenwich than all of the other suburbs in New York and New Jersey, the town facilities are excellent such as schools, a new $18 Million library, a new hospital (lobby is like a five star hotel with grand piano etc), fabulous beaches, one is a 140 acre peninsula surrounded by water, two others are islands reached by ferries, another half dozen 100 acre plus parks & nature preserves like Audubon, numerous private clubs with excellent facilities, beautiful upscale downtown with high end retail shops, gorgeous topography with many beautiful homes etc. There are many local activities: There is a polo field in Greenwich with weekend matches during the summer; a high end Classic Car Show, a Concours d'Elegance etc.
The private enclave of Belle Haven is considered to be the most desirable neighborhood in Greenwich. As mentioned before, the location of this home is EXTREMELY convenient to NYC. In about 35 minutes, one can be in Manhattan by car or train.
About 3/4 of a mile down Field Point Rd. is a westbound entrance ramp to NYC onto 95. Between the house and this entrance ramp, there are no traffic lights or traffic congestion.
It is about a mile to the railroad station, a very easy walk.
Westchester County Airport is located on the Greenwich border and is about 15 minutes away. This airport has many corporate and private jets as well as direct commercial flights to Chicago, Minneapolis, Atlanta etc. One can connect to every where else. LaGuardia Airport is about 35 minutes and JFK about 45 minutes away.
Many celebrities and extremely wealthy people have chosen Greenwich and in particular, Belle Haven to reside. for example; The first President Bush grew up here and still has relatives here; as did Ethel Kennedy, the widow of Robert Kennedy. Actor Henry Fonda formerly lived her and his children Jane & Peter grew up here as did actresses Ali Magraw and Shelly Hack.
If you are seriously interested, I also have a huge list of many more celebrities who are living (or have lived) in Greenwich.
All land owners in Belle Haven which would include the new owner of this magnificent home will have the use of the dock and mooring fields at the Belle Haven Club.
Furthermore, all land owners will have the right to be given, at the very minimum, the opportunity to become seasonal members of the Belle Haven Club.
The Belle Haven Club is within short walking distance from this home. It has a very large swimming pool with a high dive, boating facilities, several paddle tennis courts, seven tennis courts (six har-tru and one red clay) as well as an excellent dining room with a magnificent view overlooking Long Island Sound. Ivan Lendl formerly practiced here for the French Open.
